Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The East Java Regional Police Cyber Directorate has arrested a criminal syndicate for illegally registering SIM cards and selling One-Time Password (OTP) codes using stolen personal data.
Three suspects, identified as DBS, IGVS, and MA, were arrested in Bali and South Kalimantan for operating "FastSim," a website offering cheap OTP services for applications like WhatsApp and Instagram.
"Data has become a highly valuable strategic asset. The protection of personal data is not just a technological issue, but concerns the fundamental rights of citizens to security and privacy," said East Java Police Head of Public Relations Senior Superintendent Jules Abraham Abast, during a press conference on Tuesday (12/5/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.
Police seized 33 modem pools, 11 laptops, and over 25,000 illegally registered SIM cards. Investigators estimate the syndicate earned Rp1.2 billion since December 2025 by selling codes for as little as Rp 500. Authorities believe these accounts were used for online scams, phishing, and money laundering. The suspects face up to 12 years in prison.
