inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Communication and Digital Meutya Hafid emphasized that connectivity development in Indonesia must be able to drive growth while ensuring public safety.
She stated that the government still has work to do to expand national connectivity. Currently, approximately 80 percent of the population, or approximately 230 million Indonesians, are connected to digital services.
"Our goal is to ensure that 280 million Indonesians are connected, not only in areas close to Java, but also in various regions, including Sabang, Merauke, Rote Island, and Miangas," explained Meutya on Tuesday (5/12/2026).
She stated that the government is promoting the concept of three pillars for national digital development: connected, growing, and secure. According to her, connectivity development is not enough to simply provide internet access; it must also be able to generate economic growth and improve the quality of life for the community.
"No connectivity development is necessary if it does not lead to growth. This growth includes human growth, economic growth, and growth in things that naturally lead to goodness," she explained.
In addition to growth, Meutya emphasized that the government is also paying attention to the security and protection of the public in the digital space. She believes that connectivity can have negative impacts if not accompanied by efforts to maintain a safe digital space.
She cited various digital threats, such as child sexual exploitation and radicalization through online games, that need to be addressed together.
"There's no need to fight for connectivity if we can't maintain it, because connectivity can actually lead to harm if we don't," she said.
