inp.polri.go.id – Surabaya. Directorate of Water and Air Police of East Java Regional Police thwarted the smuggling of protected animals. This illegal animal delivery was originated from Balikpapan by ferry boat to Surabaya. The Directorate of Water and Air Police of East Java Regional Police said that the perpetrator put the animals into the truck with scrap metal to deceive the officers. "One perpetrator that being arrested is Muchammad Kurniawan (23), resident of Ganting, Gedangan, Sidoarjo. The arrest was conducted at 1 a.m. by Water Intelligence Team of Law Enforcement Subdirectorate of Directorate of Water and Air Police of East Java Regional Police", he said on Thursday (26/8/21). This arrest was started by public information received by the Directorate of Water and Air Police that between loads of Dharma Ferry VII motorboat, there are two trucks numbered S 9344 UT and L 8266 UB. Both trucks brought scrap metal and protected birds. When leaning in the Jamrud Pier of Tanjung Perak Harbour, Surabaya, Water Intelligence Team saw both trucks got off the ship. The team later follow the truck. "Both trucks then stopped in the front of bank buildings of Perak Timur street, Surabaya. They then followed by grey-coloured car", he said. The Directorate of Water and Air Police of East Java Regional Police said that the personnel found the moving of rare bird loads into the car. "The personnel saw the moving of several boxes suspected to be filled with birds from the truck to the Toyota Calya car. We then arrested the person and brought it to Directorate of Water and Air Police of East Java Regional Police for further investigation", he concluded. The perpetrator conducted an illegal protected animal transportation criminal act, as regulated in Law No. 5 of 1990 about Conservation of Biological Resources and Their Ecosystems.
