Inp.polri.go.id – Jakarta. The Regional Agency for Disaster Countermeasure (BPBD) extend the emergency status of wildfire in West Kalimantan to 31st September, 2023.
Information Task Force Chief, Daniel, says that the extension plan has been studied and suggested by the Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG). The agency predict that the extreme draught brought by El Nino will continue until October 1st, 2023.
“Therefore, West Kalimantan determined to extend the emergency status to 31st September. If the situation lingers, we may will extend the emergency status further to 31st October,” said Daniel quoted from RRI, Tuesday (9/12/2023).
According to him, the potential of wildfire in West Kalimantan is high, moreover with low rain intensity.
“Rain does not provide significant effect on the wildfire because the characteristic of peat. It was deep, around 2-18 meters deep,” he explained.
Furthermore, Daniel says that even mid intensity rain would also provide no effect on the wildfire if it happens in peat land.
“It still would not be able to extinguish the fire completely. We still saw smokes coming out which means there are still fire inside,” Daniel said.
