Inp.polri.go.id - Surabaya.  Inspector General Imam Sugianto, the East Java Regional Police Chief, has affirmed that the explosive storage procedures at the Gegana Detachment's Bomb Disposal Sub-detachment Office in Surabaya comply with standard operating procedures.
"We've stored several explosive materials according to regulations," he informed reporters on Monday (4/3/2024). Despite this assurance, the East Java Police will assess the suitability of the explosive storage warehouse to prevent a recurrence of the incident that injured 10 officers on Monday morning, antaranews.com reported. The facility, operational since 1951, raises concerns due to its age, prompting Chief Imam to announce plans for improvements to meet safety standards. Furthermore, the evaluation aims to locate safer storage areas to minimize community risk. Preliminary investigations by the East Java Police's Forensic Laboratory (Labfor) suggest that weather conditions affecting the storage room's humidity and temperature may have caused the explosion. The explosive involved, classified as low explosive, includes fish bombs. Although low explosives are prone to detonation, the police clarified that the object in question was intended for controlled detonation by officers.
