Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian Bishops' Conference (KWI) has joined discussions about the government's plan to seek the church's assistance in securing the release of Susi Air pilot Philip Mark Mehrtens, who is currently held captive by an armed criminal group (KKB).
Father Marthen Jenarut, KWI's Executive Secretary for Justice and Peace, said, "The church could play a role in facilitating Philip's release". He highlighted the widespread concern over Philip's captivity, emphasizing it as a violation of fundamental human rights, antaranews.com reported. Father Marthen emphasized the church's commitment to dialogue marked by openness and humility in efforts to secure Philip's freedom. "Our approach always emphasizes love and respects the dignity of all involved parties," he said on  Monday (4/3/2024). Father Marthen underscored the church's opposition to coercive measures, believing that dialogue remains the primary avenue for resolution. Minister of Coordinating Political, Legal, and Security Affairs Hadi Tjahjanto has explored potential strategies to leverage the church's influence, given the predominantly Christian population in Papua, for the New Zealander pilot's release. . Philip, a Susi Air pilot, has been in KKB captivity under Egianus Kogoya's leadership since February 7, 2023, following his landing at Paro Airport in Nduga Regency, Papua Highlands.
