Inp.polri.go.id - Surabaya. A fire broke out at PT Freeport Indonesia’s (PTFI) sulfuric acid smelter in the Gresik Special Economic Zone (KEK), East Java, on Monday (14/10/2024)at 5.45 pm local time.
PT Freeport Indonesia confirmed the incident, which was promptly handled by the company's emergency response team.
“There was a fire at the sulfuric acid smelter at KEK Gresik on Monday,” said Katri Krisnati, the Vice President of Freeport Indonesia’s Corporate Communications, as reported by antaranews.com..
“There were no fatalities. The safety of our employees is our utmost priority,” she stressed.
A video of the incident, lasting 29 seconds, circulated on WhatsApp, showing the burning factory and workers moving away from the scene. Moments later, an explosion was heard coming from the building.
