Inp.polri.go.id - Jayapura. Around 14 gold miners have been trapped near a gold mining site at Kali I, Dekai, the capital of Yahukimo Regency in the Papua Mountains, an official said.
"Our teams are currently preparing for a rescue operation, given that there are the presence of members of the Armed Criminal Groups (KKB) in the area who have been shooting at those attempting the evacuation," said Chief of the Yahukimo Sub-regional Police, Superintendent Heru Hidayanto, said on Thursday (26/10/2023).
He admitted that most of the trapped miners come from locations relatively far from the crime scene of the murder committed by KKB on last Monday (16/10/2023), which claimed seven lives.
Chief Heru said that around 200 miners have already been evacuated from the mining site.
"Many of them fled to save themselves and arrived at the security forces' position, where they were rescued," said the Police Chief.
