Communications Minister Budi Arie Setiadi announced the restriction on Thursday (1/8/2024), explaining that it aims to reduce online gambling transactions, which have increasingly relied on mobile credits. The ministry is also working to limit access to gambling sites.
Recent investigations revealed that online gambling operations used mobile credit extensively, with daily amounts ranging from Rp 100 million to Rp 1 billion. It is estimated that Rp 500 billion in mobile credits are linked to gambling activities, according ao antaranews.com..
Minister Budi Arie said that to avoid disrupting legitimate businesses, mobile credit sellers will be placed on a whitelist. The cap will apply only to transactions outside this list.
He added that such measures complement other actions, such as closing free VPN services and restricting financial transactions, to combat online gambling.
