Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  The Indonesian embassies in Yangon and Bangkok have been striving to rescue five Indonesian citizens caught in online scam operations in Hpalu, Myanmar. Director of Citizen Protection and Legal Entities at the Ministry of Foreign Affiars, Judha Nugraha, highlighted on Wednesday (3/4/2024) the challenge due to armed conflicts in Hpalu and Myawaddy, according to antaranews.com. Despite Myanmar's limited access to Hpalu, Indonesia has initiated diplomatic efforts and coordinated with local authorities, although hampered by Myanmar's current political situation. The surge in online scam cases, escalating from 189 in 2021 to 3,704 by March 2024, is concerning. Most incidents occur in Cambodia, followed by Myanmar, the Philippines, and other countries. Judha urged caution, advising Indonesians to verify overseas job offers meticulously and ensure compliance with labor regulations. Lack of signed contracts in Indonesia, absence of official work visas, and unrealistic salary promises should raise red flags. Reporting suspicious offers promptly is essential for further investigation, he said. (mg/inp/pr/nm)
