Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Immigration and Correctional Affairs will construct 33 new correctional facilities and detention centers in 2026 to alleviate systemic overcrowding.
Deputy Minister Silmy Karim said on Thursday (5/2/2026) that the expansion aims to add capacity for 9,773 inmates. With current national prison occupancy nearly 100% over capacity, the ministry estimates a deficit of 110,000 beds to meet the global benchmark of 0.1% of the total population.
"Our prison and detention center overcrowding levels are approaching 100 percent, so the capacity must certainly be expanded," said Deputy Minister Silmy Karim during a press briefing in Jakarta, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The development plan includes a "mega prison" on Nusakambangan Prison Island, Central Java, capable of housing 4,000 inmates, with another large-scale facility planned elsewhere on Java.
While the Directorate General of Corrections operates on a limited budget, the project has received backing from President Prabowo Subianto and the House of Representatives (DPR), according to Silmy.
