Inp.polri.go.id - Bangkok. Indonesia and Thailand are exploring the formation of a regional organization of ASEAN human rights ministers to advance human rights cooperation and development across Southeast Asia.
The initiative was introduced by Minister of Human Rights Natalius Pigai during a meeting with Thailand’s Minister of Justice, Tawee Sodsong, in Bangkok on Monday (21/7/2025).
“As the only ASEAN country with a dedicated Ministry of Human Rights, Indonesia is taking the initiative to invite fellow ministers to form a unified platform,” Minister Pigai said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
He emphasized that the proposed body would address shared challenges in the region, including business and human rights, environmental justice, and civil liberties.
Indonesia aims to host a ministerial meeting in Jakarta in 2026. The Thai Minister Tawee welcomed the plan, calling it a significant step for ASEAN cooperation.
