Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Law Supratman Andi Agtas has encouraged Malaysia to accede to the Apostille Convention, citing the close geographical and social ties between the two countries.

During a meeting in Jakarta with Malaysia’s Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department for Law and Institutional Reform, Dato’ Sri Azalina Othman Said, on Saturday (10/5/2025), he noted the high volume of document exchanges requiring legal authentication between citizens of both nations.

In 2024, over 6,300 Indonesians requested apostille services for use in Malaysia. Supratman emphasized how Indonesia’s membership in the Apostille Convention has streamlined document legalization and would benefit bilateral interactions if Malaysia joins.

The Apostille Convention simplifies cross-border document authentication by replacing traditional legalization with a standardized apostille certificate.

Beyond this, the ministers discussed broader ASEAN legal cooperation, including arbitration and commercial mediation. Indonesia is revising its 1999 arbitration law and supports Malaysia’s proposal to raise arbitration reform at the 2025 ASEAN Law Forum, where ASEAN law ministers are expected to sign a joint statement on international arbitration and mediation development.
