Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.  Indonesia will press ahead with efforts to eliminate plastic pollution despite the failure of international talks on a legally binding plastics treaty, Minister of Environment Hanif Faisol Nurofiq said on Monday (18/8/2025).

“With or without the treaty, Indonesia will continue to take concrete, planned, and measured steps to end plastic pollution,” he said in a statement on Monday (18/8/2025), responding to the conclusion of the Intergovernmental Negotiating Committee (INC-5.2) meeting in Geneva.

The minister reiterated the government’s target of achieving 100 percent waste management by 2029 and stressed Indonesia’s ambition to be a global leader in tackling plastic waste.

The Geneva session, held 5 to 15 August 2025, failed to reach consensus on the Global Plastics Treaty but agreed to resume talks at INC-5.3.

Indonesia’s delegation pushed for eliminating problematic plastics, promoting reusable and recyclable product design, advancing circular economy practices, and restoring ecosystems damaged by plastic. Nurofiq urged stronger international cooperation, financial support, and technology transfer to ensure an ambitious, inclusive treaty.
