inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Indonesian National Police (INP) continues to strengthen law enforcement in wildfire cases. As of Monday (9/7/2026), 138 suspects had been named from 200 police reports handled.

INP Chief General Listyo Sigit Prabowo stated that of these, 119 suspects are suspected of intentionally setting fires, while 19 others are related to wildfires caused by negligence.

From the results of the police's current handling of 200 police reports, 138 were named  suspects for both intentional and negligent acts.

"There are 119 intentional acts and 19 negligent acts," said the INP Chief at a press conference in Jakarta on Monday (9/7/2026).

The INP Chief emphasized that the number of suspects could continue to increase. The police are still investigating reports and findings of wildfires in various regions.

In addition to targeting individual perpetrators, the police are also beginning to investigate the involvement of corporations. Eight corporations are currently undergoing legal proceedings related to forest and land fires.

Sigit stated that INP is coordinating with the Ministry of Forestry and the Ministry of Environment to handle companies suspected of being linked to the forest and land fires.

Previously, several companies had received administrative sanctions from the relevant ministries.

These sanctions include the permit freezing for 18 companies and revocation of permits for 42 companies.

Sigit explained that legal proceedings against perpetrators of forest and land fires can utilize several laws and regulations. These include provisions related to forest areas, plantations, and environmental protection and management.

The application of several layered articles is being carried out to ensure optimal handling of forest and land fire cases and provide a deterrent effect.

In addition to prosecuting perpetrators, the INPe, along with TNI, local governments, and relevant agencies, are also continuing to strengthen prevention efforts.

Public education is conducted to increase understanding of land clearing regulations, including the risks and legal consequences of burning that can trigger forest and land fires.
