The Indonesian National Police (INP) has taken a number of initial mitigation measures to anticipate the impact of volcanic ash from the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau, which has spread to several areas. These measures include deploying personnel and supporting facilities to assist the community and reduce the impact of volcanic ash on their health and activities.
One of the efforts undertaken by police personnel is deploying Armored Water Cannon (AWC) vehicles to spray several roads affected by volcanic ash. This spraying is carried out to clear ash deposits on road surfaces and reduce the potential for ash to re-emerge due to wind and vehicle activity.
In addition to spraying roads, police personnel in several areas also distributed free masks to the public, especially to those who still need to carry out activities outside the home.
Polri also provided health services to affected communities, including those in the airport area, as part of an effort to ensure that the public receives the assistance and services needed amidst the impact of the eruption.
Head of the Public Relations Division of INP, Inspector General Johnny Eddizon Isir stated that these various measures are their initial mitigation efforts in responding to the impact of the eruption of Mount Anak Krakatau. He stated that INP continues to monitor and will adjust their response measures based on developments on the ground.
"These measures taken by INP are initial mitigation efforts to help the community deal with the impact of the volcanic ash from Mount Anak Krakatau. We are spraying roads, distributing masks, and providing health services to those in need," Isir said.
Isir emphasized that INP will continue to be present and work with all stakeholders to provide protection and services to the community in the affected areas. Regional officials are also asked to continue monitoring the situation and taking the necessary steps according to conditions on the ground.
Meanwhile, Isir urged the public to remain calm and not panic in responding to this situation. The public is expected to continue carrying out their daily activities while paying attention to safety and health factors and following official information and directions from the government and relevant agencies.
"We urge the public to remain calm and not panic. Public activities can continue as long as they are mindful of environmental conditions. The most important thing is to maintain good health, especially by wearing masks when outdoors to reduce exposure to volcanic ash," said Isir.
