inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. International Observer, Suzie Sri Suparin S. Sudarman appreciated Indonesia's role in ASEAN in maintaining stability in the Southeast Asia region. For this reason, Indonesia needs to invite ASEAN to encourage global disarmament.

“Because this nuclear weapon issue has become a complicated issue in Asia,” said Suzie quoted from RRI on Saturday (7/27/2024).

She noted that in the 57th ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Meeting (AMM), the group did well, particularly in anticipating security stability in Southeast Asia.

“Because right now, there is a geopolitical transition with the possibility of bigger conflicts,” she states.

Suzie advised Indonesia to encourage global disarmament and non-proliferation. This is because the issue of nuclear weapons is a very complicated issue in the Asian region.

“Because in Asia, there is North Korea and there is a probability of conflict in the Korean peninsula. This issue should be overcomed quickly and needs to be addressed daily in ASEAN meetings,” explains Suzie.

Furthermore, Suzie also highlights the discussion on the Myanmar Crisis during the AMM. According to her, this matter becomes crucial because of the involvement of superpower countries such as the United States of America.

“This is because ASEAN is still unable to build the economy of its members. So it’s hard for us to free ourselves from the big countries,” she noted.

Previously, during the Retreat Meeting of ASEAN Foreign Ministers in Vientiane, Indonesian Foreign Minister Retno Marsudi expressed her disappointment due to lack of progress on Five Point Consensus by Myanmar.

She also underscores that ASEAN is not a proxy or any power to further guarantee security stability and peace in the Southeast Asia region.
