Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) reduced Jakarta’s rainfall by 50-60% through a weather modification operation from 1 to 6 February 2024.
BMKG, in collaboration with BPBD Jakarta and the Air Force, deployed 6.4 tons of salt (NaCl) over western Jakarta’s skies to disperse rain clouds, according to antaranews.com.
“The operation effectively reduced the risk of hydrometeorological disasters in Jakarta,” said BMKG Deputy for Weather Modification Tri Handoko Seto on Sunday (9/2/2025).
The intervention followed extreme rainfall exceeding 300 mm per day on 29 and 30 January 2025, which caused flooding in 34 neighborhoods across West, North, and East Jakarta.
Despite reduced rainfall, some roads and homes remain inundated, with 1,944 residents affected.
