inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Karanganyar Class IIA Penitentiary, Nusakambangan, Central Java, assisted in the repatriation of Baihaqi, a prisoner serving a death sentence who died of illness.

"Currently, the deceased's family is completing the administrative requirements for the application letter, identity documents, and other data," said Karanganyar Prison Chief Riko Purnama Candra in a statement on Tuesday (9/2/2025).

Baihaqi breathed his last at the Cilacap Regional General Hospital (RSUD) on Monday (9/1/2025). Riko expressed his deep condolences for the passing of one of the inmates at Karanganyar Prison.

Although there is no regulation requiring the repatriation of the body of a prisoner to his place of origin, Riko said that at the request of the family and for humanitarian reasons, his party is trying to repatriate Baihaqi to his birthplace n in Aceh.

"According to Government Regulation Number 32 of 1999 Article 18 paragraph (3), the prison authorities are not obliged to return the body to its place of origin and if it is not collected by the family within 24 hours, it will be buried properly by the prison authorities according to their religion and beliefs. However, due to the family's request and for humanitarian reasons, the prison authorities are currently in the process of trying to send the body of the deceased to the family at the appropriate address," he said.

Riko explained that Karanganyar Prison had contacted the deceased's wife who works in Malaysia to confirm the family's home address in eastern Aceh.

Baihaqi, Riko explained, is a death row inmate for a drug case. Initially, Baihaqi complained of shortness of breath and nausea, and was treated by prison medics before being referred to Cilacap Regional Hospital.

"After medical treatment by the RSUD medical team, the deceased died due to heart disease," said Riko.
