KPK Launches Corruption Probe into LPEI

Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta.   The Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) announced its investigation into suspected corruption related to credit facilities provided by the Indonesian Export Financing Institution (LPEI) that cost the state financial  Rp 3.45 trillion in financial losses. KPK Deputy Chairman Nurul Ghufron disclosed that on 19 March 2024, the KPK elevated its inquiry from suspicions of irregularities or corruption in LPEI's credit provision to a full-fledged investigation." Concerning a recent similar case reported by Finance Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati to Attorney General ST Burhanuddin, he clarified that the KPK has been handling the matter since 10 May 2023, as reported by antaranews.com Ghufron outlined a departure from standard procedures in this case, explaining, "Traditionally, the KPK announces investigations and identifies suspects. However, in this instance, we've chosen to disclose and declare the investigation's status today, before naming any suspects formally." Addressing Article 50 of the KPK Law, he emphasized that once the KPK commences an investigation, neither the police nor the prosecutors can initiate their own probes. However, if either has already begun an investigation, they must inform the KPK within 14 days. The KPK shared that it has scrutinized three corporations in connection with the alleged corruption case, contrasting the Attorney General's Office, which identified four corporations involved in fraud. Minister Sri Mulyani Indrawati lodged a report with the Attorney General's Office, alleging debtor fraud at LPEI by four debtors that collectively holding outstanding balances of Rp2.5 trillion.
