Indonesian President Joko Widodo handed over the ASEAN Chairmanship to Laos Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone during the closing of 43rd ASEAN Summit in Jakarta Convention Center (JCC), Jakarta, Thursday (9/7/2023). The symbolic event was ceremoniously marked by gavel hand over from Jokowi to Siphandone around 17:00. The hand over means that Laos will be the next chair of ASEAN 2024. Jokowi expressed his greatest appreciation to head of states of ASEAN state members and partners who attend the 43rd ASEAN Summit. During the meeting, Jokowi felt the prevailing sense of optimism and positive energy among all the participants. This reinforces hope and strengthen the resolve to continue their collective efforts towards realizing a peaceful, stable, and prosperous region. “It is time to hand over the chairmanship to Laos. Let us together reinforce our collaboration and cooperation for a prosperous ASEAN and create a better world for all,” calls Jokowi. Accepting the responsibility, Siphandone pledges to continue the efforts of Indonesia in building a connected and strong ASEAN. The chairmanship of ASEAN in 2024 will brought the theme of “Enhancing Connectivity and Resilience”. Siphandone states that Laos will push ASEAN external partnership while strengthening ASEAN unity and centrality. “We will also improve connectivity, closing the development gap, pushing carbon neutral goals and regional digital transformation,” he said. Laos Premier Siphandone also expressed his amazement and congratulates Jokowi and Indonesians for the success of the 43rd ASEAN Summit. “We truly praised the achievement of ASEAN under the leadership of Indonesian who brought the theme of ASEAN: Epicentrum of Growth,” praised Siphandone.
