inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. A man identified as "A" in West Jakarta filed a false police robbery report to avoid paying installments on a laptop worth IDR 27 million.

West Jakarta Sub-regional Metro Police Mobile Brigade Unit Head, Police Senior Inspector George Ruben, said the case began with a report from the victim claiming to have been mugged while carrying a laptop in the Cengkareng area. However, after investigating, police discovered the incident never occurred.

"After we investigated further, it turned out the incident was untrue. The victim reported to the police that he had been mugged, but after further investigation, it turned out the victim had simply made up the story," George told reporters in Jakarta on Friday (7/24/2026).

According to him, the false report was made so the victim could file a complaint with the financing company, preventing him from continuing his ongoing laptop installment payments.

"He simply made up the story. Based on the police report, the victim could then file a lawsuit with the laptop credit company to avoid paying the installments," George said.

He explained that the laptop the victim had purchased on credit had a 24-month term, with monthly installments of IDR 1.2 million. However, to date, the victim had only made five installment payments.

In his report, the victim also claimed to have suffered injuries from the robbery. However, investigators found a different truth.

"The victim did indeed suffer injuries to his left arm. After further investigation, it turned out the victim had injured himself using scissors to convince investigators that he was indeed the victim of a robbery," said George.

He stated that the victim committed the self-harm in his own home in the Kalideres area of West Jakarta.

"He did it at home, in the bathroom, using scissors," George revealed.

He also emphasized that the perpetrator's primary motive for the fraud was to avoid paying his laptop installments.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the victim also admitted to getting the idea for the fraud after searching for information through artificial intelligence (AI) on how to avoid paying his loan.

"We are still investigating this case. We will announce the next steps later," George concluded.
