In a significant step towards ensuring human rights-friendly elections in 2024, the Ministry of Law and Human Rights and the General Elections Commission (KPU) have joined forces to enhance the quality of the electoral process. Director-General of Human Rights at the Ministry, Dhahana Putra, emphasized the importance of this joint endeavor to support "human rights friendly" election after an audience with KPU members on Friday (13/10/2023) He elaborated on the plan to establish specific polling stations in correctional facilities and detention centers, ensuring that the vulnerable citizens in those facilities can exercise their right to vote. "As citizens, they have the right to vote. Consequently, the KPU will set up polling stations in each of these groups. This illustrates that the KPU is also concerned about human rights," Director General Dhahana said as reported by antaranews.com. This collaboration was a follow up of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by both institutions in 2022. Dhahana expressed his gratitude for the ongoing collaboration, emphasizing the shared responsibility to conduct elections that are fair, smooth, and peaceful. Idham Holik, a KPU member, highlighted the significance of the visit by the Director-General of Human Rights and the strong partnership between the two organizations. Both the KPU and the Ministry share a mutual focus on enhancing the inclusivity of elections, ensuring that every citizen, regardless of gender, age, disability, ethnicity, religion, or socio-economic background, has an equal opportunity to participate in the democratic process, he said.
