Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation (PVMBG) has reported a rise in volcanic activity at Mount Marapi in West Sumatra, starting 7 October 2024.

PVMBG official Teguh said on Sunday (27/10/2024) that the volcano has shown signs of increased seismic activity, leading to several eruptions.

On Sunday alone, the Bukittinggi Volcano Monitoring Post recorded four eruptions. The first occurred at 7 am. local time, with an ash plume rising 1,000 meters above the summit and drifting northwest. The eruption lasted about two minutes and registered a maximum amplitude of 27 millimeters on seismographs, according to antaranews.com.

Subsequent eruptions followed, with ash columns reaching heights of 800 to 2,000 meters. The third eruption, at 9.56 am, sent a thick gray plume 2,000 meters high toward the northwest, lasting 59 seconds.

PVMBG has noted that Mount Marapi’s activity has shifted from phreatic to magmatic, indicating deeper, possibly sustained activity.
