The National Museum, also known as the Elephant Museum, has announced a temporary closure of up to one year in the aftermath of a destructive fire that occurred on September 16th. Fitra Arda, Secretary of the Directorate General of Culture at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology, said during a public discussion on Monday (25/9/2023) about the the renovation plans and the commitment to reopening only once the museum is restored to its former glory. "We will temporarily close the museum, and there is a possibility it may be closed for a year. We will carry out renovations until it is ready, and then we will reopen it," he was quoted by antaranews.com as saying. The closure, however, did not mean the halt of  all public services.  Fitra reassured that various Museum services would remain available virtually or through alternative museum units. The Ministry has been working in collaboration with law enforcement agencies and experts to address the impacts of the fire incident. A comprehensive approach includes technical archaeological studies, building audits, security and safety assessments of the museum, collection studies, human resources evaluations, and risk management. In addition to addressing structural and safety concerns, efforts have been being made to salvage and restore the collections that were affected by the fire. The restoration project encompasses the complete reorganization and enhancement of the museum's overall presentation. The fire at the Museum in Central Jakarta, caused by an electrical short circuit during renovation work in Building Block A, has damaged the rear sections. (mg/inp/pr/nm).
