Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Presidential Palace on Monday (19/1/2026) denied any intention to change Indonesia’s presidential election system from a direct public vote to selection by the People’s Consultative Assembly (MPR), amid growing public speculation in Jakarta.

“There is no intention and no discussion about changing the presidential election system to be decided by the House of Representatives or the People’s Consultative Assembly,” State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi said at the Presidential Palace, as cited by antaranews.com.

He stressed that the government and the DPR have agreed to maintain direct presidential elections, adding that proposals to elect regional leaders through local councils are not on this year’s legislative agenda. He added that revisions to the Regional Elections Law are not included in the 2026 Priority National Legislation Program.

The Palace also reiterated President Prabowo Subianto’s stance that democratic competition must ultimately serve public interests. Earlier, DPR leaders likewise confirmed that revisions to the Election Law in 2026 will not alter the presidential election mechanism, seeking to dispel misinformation circulating among the public.
