Inp.polri.go.id - Timika. Papua Regional Police Chief, Inspector General Mathius Fakhiri, has rejected the claim that the armed criminal group (KKB) has taken control of Oksibil, the capital of Pegunungan Bintang Regency in Papua.
"The area remains under our control and is secure. Any claims of KKB control are false," he said in Timika on Tuesday (19/9/2023) as reported by antaranews.com.
General Fakhiri announced plans to strengthen efforts against groups falsely operating under the KKB banner, cracking down on their violent and criminal activities, rather than pursuing any independence agenda.
To address this, the Papua Regional Policec will increase the deployment of Mobile Brigade personnel and conduct on-site investigations.
General Fakhiri expressed deep concern about escalating attacks on civilians and the destruction of public facilities carried out by the KKB and its supporters. These actions adversely affect local communities' access to essential services like healthcare and education, and he called for an end to such activities.
As of Tuesday, the situation in Oksibil was relatively stable and under control, with security forces maintaining a high level of readiness, he confirmed.
Recent incidents include a deadly skirmish between the Damai Cartenz Task Force and KKB in Serambakon earlier on Monday (18/9), which claimed the life of a North Sulawesi Regional Police Brimob member, First Brigadier Rudi Agung Azhari. Residents in Oksop village were reportedly shot in their homes that same evening.
On Tuesday morning (19/9), the KKB confronted and assaulted a local administration official in Pegunungan Bintang, resulting in injuries.(mg/inp/pr/nm)
