Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Communication and Digital Affairs Meutya Hafid has confirmed that the newly established Reciprocal Trade Agreement (ART) with the United States will not bypass Indonesia's sovereignty.
“Our sovereign anchor remains the Personal Data Protection Law. We are committed to protecting our citizens' data,” she said on Wednesday (25/2/2026), as cited by antaranews.com.
Minister Meutya noted that while data rotation between Indonesia and global platforms, particularly those from the U.S., is already a daily reality, the ART provides a much-needed formal legal framework for these activities.
The Ministry of Economic Affairs has earlier said that this agreement focuses on business-related data essential for e-commerce, cloud services, and digital finance. Officials emphasized that there is no surrender of data sovereignty; instead, the clear regulatory framework is expected to position Indonesia as a regional digital hub, attracting significant investment in data centers and cloud infrastructure.
