Inp.polri.go.id - Sorong. The Sorong Sub-regional Police in Southwest Papua has been hunting down 45 inmates who escaped from the Sorong Prison, employing roadblocks at various points in the region on Monday (8/1/2024)
Sorong Police Chief Senior Superintendent Happy Perdana Yudianto explained that out of the total 53 prisoners who escaped, eight have been re-captured, leaving 45 at large.
"While eight inmates have been captured, the remaining 45 are at large," he said.
Chief Happy said that the deployment of police personnel to block exit points to other districts in the Sorong area aimed to restrict the movements of the escaped prisoners.
The Sorong Police has coordinated with police precincts in the Southwest Papua region to assist in closing off exit routes for the escaped inmates.
"We have closed all exit points, including inter-district routes, ports, and airports in Southwest Papua," Chief Happy said.
Sorong Police is investigating the exact cause of the prisoners' escape.
Meanwhile, Manuel Yenusi, the Head of the Sorong Prison, explained that the inmates escaped after Sunday worship at 11.30 am.
