The Situbondo Sub-regional Police in East Java are investigating the cause of a roof collapse at a girls’ dormitory of the Salafiyah Syafi’iyah Syekh Abdul Qodir Jaelani Islamic boarding school in Blimbing Village, Besuki District, which killed one student and injured 18 others early Wednesday morning (29/10/2025).
“We are examining the exact cause of the collapse. While extreme weather is suspected, we are waiting for the technical inspection results from structural experts,” said Situbondo Police Chief Superintendent Rezi Dharmawan, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The roof reportedly gave way around 1 am after heavy rain and strong winds hit the area. Police have cordoned off the site and are coordinating with the Ministry of Religious Affairs and local authorities to ensure safety and assist victims.
“We express our condolences for this tragedy. Our priority is securing the area and ensuring all victims receive proper care,” Chief Rezi said.
The deceased student has been buried, and the family has accepted the loss.
