Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. President Joko Widodo has taken decisive action in response to the pressing challenges posed by extreme weather in Central Papua. In a directive issued on Monday (31/7/23), the President instructed various key entities, including ministries, relevant agencies, and local governments in the region, to urgently address the far-reaching impacts of the adverse conditions. "I have instructed the Coordinating Minister for Human Development and Culture, the Minister of Social Affairs, the National Disaster Management Countermeasure, and the authorities in Papua to handle the situation as quickly as possible," said President Jokowi. President Jokowi emphasized the situation by drawing attention to specific areas in Central Papua where the snow season severely hampers plant growth, particularly in high-altitude districts. "The problem is, you see, there are specific areas in Central Papua where plants cannot grow during the snow season, especially in the high-altitude districts," explained President Jokowi. However, the challenges faced in delivering much-needed aid to the affected communities are not solely confined to weather-related impediments. Security concerns have also arisen, hindering the distribution process. President Jokowi said that delivery aircraft are reluctant to land due to security factors, exacerbating the situation. "That's why I requested the assistance of the Indonesian Military to provide security. The area always faces this issue, with very difficult terrain, and the pilots are sometimes unwilling to land, causing this problem," he said. Extreme weather conditions in Central Papua has persisted since June 2023, with tragic consequences already unfolding. It is reported that a minimum of six fatalities has been attributed to the harsh weather, leading to crop failures and a dire famine situation in several districts in the area.
