Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Deputy Chairman of the People's Consultative Assembly (MPR) Yandri Susanto expressed the need for dissemination of Supreme Court Circular (SEMA) No. 2/2023 prohibiting judges to register marriages between people of different religions and beliefs.
While SEMA No. 2/2023 primarily deals with internal procedures for judges, he asserted its critical importance in prohibiting judges at all levels from approving applications for the registration of interfaith marriages.
Speaking in Jakarta on Thursday (16/11/2023), Yandri said, "SEMA No. 2 /2023 must be disseminated to all Indonesians. Although it is an internal directive for judges, its substance is a prohibition for judges at all court levels to grant applications for the registration of interfaith marriages".
Addressing the gathering, which included representatives of Islamic civil society organisations and Islamic youth organisations, he highlighted the daily occurrence of interfaith marriages.
"I hope that MUI will work with social media activists to develop a strategy for the comprehensive dissemination of SEMA No. 2/2023 to the entire community. In this way, the content presented will be engaging and easily digestible for today's younger generation," Yandri added., referring to the Indonesian Ulema Council.
He explained that the loophole allowing the registration of interfaith marriages in Indonesia stems from the declaration in Article 35(a) of Law No. 23 of 2006 on Population Administration.
