Inp.polri.go.id - Semarang.. Rescue teams evacuated 52 crew members from the KM Kirana I ship, owned by PT Dharma Lautan Utama (DLU), which caught fire in the Semarang waters, Central Java, on Sunday (11/8/2024).
Central Java Regional Police Director of Water and Air Police Senior Superintendent Hariadi reported that some crew members had jumped into the sea during the blaze.
"All crew members were evacuated, including those who had jumped into the water," he said, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The evacuation was carried out using the police’s vessels and several tugboats that also assisted in extinguishing the fire.
Chief Hariadi confirmed that no casualties were reported as the ship was not carrying passengers at the time of the fire. Efforts to extinguish the fire and secure the area continued.
The cause of the fire will be investigated once the blaze is fully extinguished. KM Kirana I ship caught fire approximately 3 miles from Tanjung Emas Port on Sunday afternoon. The ship was scheduled to dock at Semarang Port before continuing to Sampit on 13 August 2024.
