Tri Sudarno, a member of the Search and Rescue (SAR) Jayapura, lost his life while attempting to evacuate Theopilus Yaboisembut (20), suspected of attempting suicide by climbing a tower in the Sabron Yaru area of the West Sentani District, Jayapura Regency, Papua, on Wednesday. "Tri Sudarno fell from a height of about 15 meters while trying to bring down the victim from the Telkomsel tower," said Melkianus Kotta, the Head of SAR Jayapura, on Thursday (14/3/2024). Despite previous success in lowering the victim from a height of about 50 meters, Tri faced resistance from Theopilus during the rescue attempt. Theopilus continued to resist, prompting Tri to step aside and hold onto the tower's metal. As Theopilus struggled and resisted being brought down, Tri called for help from a fellow SAR member on the tower. In a moment of panic, Tri released his grip when Theopilus pushed his body outward, resulting in both falling from a height of about 15 meters. Theopilus survived and is now under the care of Youwari Sentani Hospital, but Tri passed away after receiving medical treatment in the same hospital.
