inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police stated that the destruction of public facilities and the burning of the fence of the DPR/MPR RI building during a demonstration in the Senayan area of Jakarta on Thursday evening (8/27/2026) were carried out by a group deliberately causing unrest.
The Head of Public Relations of the Jakarta Regional Metropolitan Police, Senior Superintendent Budi Hermanto, stated that the action was no longer related to the expression of aspirations.
According to him, some of the protesters who arrived after the United Pati Community Alliance (AMPB) demonstration actually engaged in actions that disrupted public order and security.
"That was the work of a group of rioters or those disrupting public order and security," Budi told reporters in Jakarta on Friday (8/28/2026).
Budi explained that the AMPB's expression of aspirations had actually concluded from noon to evening. The protesters had also dispersed peacefully after meeting with the DPR leadership.
However, another crowd arrived and occupied the gate of the DPR/MPR RI building. The situation then escalated, leading to acts of vandalism and the burning of the fence.
Seeing the increasingly volatile situation and the approaching nighttime hours, the police took gradual steps.
These measures were taken in consideration of the provisions of Law Number 9 of 1998 concerning Freedom of Expression in Public and the public's interest in continuing to carry out their activities safely.
Budi emphasized that the destruction of public facilities is very detrimental to the community. This is because damaged facilities can disrupt services and public activities.
"Acts of vandalism can certainly disrupt social order and regularity. This is very detrimental because when public facilities are damaged, it can ultimately disrupt services to the general public," he said.
The police also appreciated the public for maintaining a safe and conducive situation throughout the demonstration.
