The recognition of the Indonesian language as the 10th official language by the UNESCO General Conference is a golden opportunity to raise the status of the Indonesian language on the international stage, said E. Aminudin Aziz, head of the Language Development and Guidance Agency at the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology. "The door is now wide open, offering numerous opportunities, and it would be a missed opportunity not to take advantage of this golden opportunity to develop or globalise the Indonesian language," Amin said on Thursday (14/12/2023). With UNESCO recognition, he emphasized that the government is obliged to translate UNESCO documents into Indonesian. "We will translate UNESCO documents according to the decisions of the Indonesian government, such as the UNESCO Constitution, which we have already translated," Amin explained. He went on to outline the government's second commitment, which is to translate key Indonesian documents, such as the 1945 Constitution and flag laws, into French and English in line with UNESCO standards. In addition, Amin said, the government is required to provide interpreters for meetings held in the Indonesian language who meet the standards set by UNESCO. Amin revealed that the Language Agency will continue to cooperate with UNESCO in various activities, such as discussions on regional literature. In the same context, Amin addressed another goal for the Indonesian language in the country, acknowledging the prevailing problem of many people prioritising foreign languages in public spaces.
