Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Minister of Housing Maruarar Sirait announced his support for President Prabowo Subianto’s plan to relocate prisons from strategic urban areas to remote regions, converting the land into housing for low-income residents.
“This is a smart move by President Prabowo—relocating urban prisons to make space for homes,” he said at a housing association event on Monday night (21/4/2025).
The plan targets prisons in cities like Jakarta, Bandung, and Medan. Sirait said he had received direct instructions from the President and is working with the Immigration and Correctional Affairs Minister to map out prisons suitable for relocation.
Relocated facilities will be built in remote areas to limit inmates’ access to the outside world and reduce escape risks, while unlocking valuable land for urban development.
“It’s a strategic directive from the President,” said Minister Maruarar, as quoted by antaranews.com.
President Prabowo earlier proposed building correctional facilities on isolated islands to increase deterrence, especially for corrupt officials.
