inp.polri.go.id - Amerika Serikat. The United States kills Al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri in a drone strike in Afghanistan. US President Joe Biden said Zawahiri, aged 71, remains the international symbol of the terrorist group 11 years after Osama bin Laden's death. Zawahiri is even said to be acting as bin Laden's personal doctor. "He was deeply involved in planning the attacks of September 11, 2001 (9/11), one of the main actors for the attacks that killed 2,977 people on American soil. For decades, he was the mastermind behind attacks on Americans," Biden told a conference call at the White House on Monday (1/8). "I also approve of a precise strike to wipe him (Zawahiri) once and for all," Biden said. Zawahiri had been hiding in a safe house in Kabul, according to US officials. He died after two Hellfire missiles hit the house. The US drone strike was carried out on Saturday last weekend at around 21:48 local time. No American personnel were in Afghanistan at the time of the attack. Biden has authorized the attack operation several weeks ago. Meanwhile, the Taliban regime in power in Afghanistan is aware of Zawahiri's presence in the area, according to US officials. Due to that, US officials said that the Taliban has violated the Doha agreement. The Taliban are even said to have taken steps to deny and conceal Zawahiri's presence after Saturday's successful attack, restricted access to the terrorist's safe house, and quickly moved Zawahiri family members, including his daughter and children who were not targeted by the US attack. Meanwhile, the Taliban confirmed the US drone strike. On Twitter, Taliban spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid said "An air strike took place and targeted a resident's house in Sherpur, Kabul, on July 31." "The nature of the incident was not clear at first, but the security and intelligence services of the Islamic Emirate (Afghanistan) investigated the incident and preliminary findings determined that the attack was carried out by an American drone," Mujahid was quoted as saying by CNN. Mujahid said the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan "strongly condemns this attack under any pretext and calls it a clear violation of international principles and the Doha Agreement."
