Inp.polri.go.id - Bandung. West Java Regional Police suspect that the riot near Universitas Islam Bandung (Unisba) on Monday night was deliberately orchestrated by a group aiming to provoke security forces into entering the campus.
Police, however, stressed they did not attack the university grounds.
“We analyzed that this was designed, planned, to lure us into storming the campus, but fortunately we did not do that,” West Java Police Chief Inspector General Rudi Setiawan said on Tuesday (2/9/2025), as quoted by antaranews.com.
Authorities reported that around 150–200 masked people dressed in black blocked Tamansari Street, armed with stones, iron rods, and wood. Molotov cocktails were thrown at police vehicles, posing a deadly threat to officers. Police responded with large-scale patrols and dispersal measures under legal procedures.
Officials emphasized the rioters may not have been Unisba students but outsiders exploiting the campus. Tear gas was deployed after Molotov's were allegedly hurled from within campus grounds, including at an armored Brimob vehicle.
