Inp.polri.go.id - Manokwari. The West Papua administration has initiated the second phase of an eight-hectare food security garden in Susweni, Manokwari Regency.
"This garden is a step towards safeguarding national food security and preventing inflation spikes," said Jacob S Fonataba, Acting Secretary of the West Papua Province, on Wednesday (25/10/23).
He explained that various types of staple crops are being grown using both conventional and hydroponic methods, managed by 43 local government departments within the provincial scope.
Jacob added that the provincial government has been collaborating with the University of Papua for the accurate use of superior seeds, planting patterns, organic fertilizer application, and pest control. The West Papua administration will open the space for the community to collectively harvest the yields from the food security garden.
Deputy Head of the West Papua Representative Office of Bank Indonesia Roni Cahyadi explained that the launch of the food security garden is part of a program to control inflation of agricultural commodities. Earlier, in partnership with local administrations, Bank Indonesia initiated the planting of MA-11 rice, utilizing organic fertilizer, in the Prafi District of Manokwari.
"The planting initiative aims to maintain the supply to prevent inflation spikes," said Roni.
