Inp.polri.go.id - Manokwari. Inspector General Johnny Eddison Isir, the Chief of West Papua Regional Police, declared on Sunday (21/1/2024) the finalization of directives aimed at combating unauthorized gold mining activities.
He issued a stern ultimatum to illegal gold miners, demanding an immediate halt to activities involving heavy machinery and hazardous substances, particularly mercury. The specialized task force dedicated to eradicating illegal mining was established in March 2024, antaranews.com reported.
Chief Johny stressed the unequivocal stance of law enforcement against illegal mining and warned of stringent actions for non-compliance.
He highlighted the historical issue of corruption within the mining sector, saying, "I have conveyed to officials who used to accept (mining bribery money), now don't accept because I don't accept, and I don't want to accept."
This measure aimed to curtail the environmental degradation caused by illegal mining, exemplified by past natural disasters like the 2010 flash floods in Wasior, Teluk Wondama Regency.
Chief Johny emphasized the collective responsibility of all community stakeholders, especially land rights owners, in understanding and mitigating the ecological impact of unchecked resource exploitation.
