inp.polri.go.id – Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said Russia started a gas war against European countries Monday (25/7). "Today, we heard a new gas threat to Europe countries. This is an open gas war that Russia is waging towards European unity," Zelensky said, referring to an announcement from Russian gas company Gazprom regarding a cut in supplies to Europe. "They don't care what happens to the people, the struggle they felt, from hunger to blocking ports, from the cold of winter and poverty, or colonization. It's just a different form of terrorism," he said. In addition, Zelensky urged Europe countries to tighten their sanctions on Russia. "Because of that you have to retaliate. Don't think about returning the turbines, you should have strengthen the sanctions instead," Zelensky said. As reported by AFP, the company Gazprom said it would cut off daily gas shipments to Europe via the Nord Stream pipeline starting Wednesday (27/7). Gazprom said it was suspending operation of one of the last two Europe turbines operating in the pipeline due to "engine technical conditions." Even so, the German government said there was no technical justification for Gazprom's statement. Before deciding to suspend gas services, Russia had returned gas supplies to Europe via Germany last week. However, the gas supply provided is only 40% of the pipe capacity. Europe itself is very dependent on Russian energy sources. Meanwhile, Western countries accuse Russia of using energy to retaliate against sanctions imposed by them when the Kremlin invaded Ukraine.
