inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Deputy for Food, Natural Resources, and Environment of the Ministry of National Development Planning/National Development Planning Agency (PPN/Bappenas) Leonardo A. A. T. Sambodo reveals Indonesia's commitment to reduce nickel industry emissions by 81 percent by 2045.
This was conveyed when the Ministry of PPN/Bappenas together with the World Resources Institute (WRI) Indonesia launched the National Nickel Industry Decarbonization Roadmap, as part of a real effort to support sustainable energy transitions and low-carbon development.
"This roadmap targets a reduction in nickel industry emissions by 81 percent by 2045, in line with Indonesia's commitment to achieve Net Zero Emissions before 2060," said Leonardo, on Friday (6/13/2025).
As a producer of 60 percent of the world's nickel, Indonesia is said to have great potential in encouraging low-emission and highly competitive nickel downstreaming.
The roadmap itself is designed to be a strategic input in the 2025–2029 National Medium-Term Development Plan (RPJMN) and is in line with the targets of the 2025–2045 National Long-Term Development Plan (RPJPN).
Since early 2024, he continued, the preparation of the roadmap has involved multi-party collaboration, including more than 30 mining companies and nickel smelters in the Sulawesi and North Maluku regions, 15 ministries/institutions, and academics.
The four main strategies in this roadmap are energy and material efficiency, fuel replacement, material substitution, and the use of low-carbon electricity. The strategy of using low-carbon electricity is a priority, considering that the largest source of emissions in the nickel industry comes from captive Steam Power Plants.
"By utilizing the potential of new and renewable energy in nickel producing and processing areas, the industry can utilize an energy mix sourced from solar, wind, water, biomass, and green hydrogen to reduce dependence on coal," said Deputy Leonardo.
