Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. Vice Chairman of Indonesian House of Representatives Cucun appeals for the government to provide protection for the Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMI) who have been shot by the Malaysian Maritime Authority (APMM).
Currently the victims are being treated at the Malaysian health facilities and under the supervision of APMM.
Cucun hopes that the government can immediately provide assistance, both in supervision and legal assistance to migrant workers. According to him, the state must guarantee protection for its citizens.
He also supports the step taken by the Indonesian Ambassador for Malaysia in Kuala Lumpur who has sent the diplomatic note to the Malaysian Government in pushing the investigation on the incident, and to see the possibility of the use of excessive force by the authority.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, along with the Indonesian Ambassador, Indonesian Migrant Worker Protection (PPMI), and police attaché are urged to continue coordinating with the Malaysia government in handling this case. Cucun strongly condemns the use of firearms by APMM, which has killed one of PMIs. Cucun saw that the actions cannot be justified.
"If they ever need to act firmly, they should approach differently. The use of firearms against civilians cannot be justified," says Cucun on Tuesday (1/28/2025).
In addition, highlighting the problem of many Indonesian migrant workers who are working illegally, he asked the Ministry of Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers to find a solution so that similar cases do not recur.
Cucun also assessed that the formation of a special ministry for migrant workers was proof of President Prabowo Subianto's commitment to protecting migrant workers.
"Breakthrough steps are needed so that our citizens are not tempted to work illegally abroad, which often ends in human trafficking or violence," said Cucun.
