inp.pori.go.id - Jakarta. The government and various child protection institutions have paid serious attention in guaranteeing safe digital spaces for kids. The Vice Head of Indonesian Child Protection Commission (KPAI), Jasra Putra, noted that the study research on the regulations is still ongoing.
In his statement, he says that one of the ways to suppress the negative impact of the internet is through age restrictions.
“Other than age restrictions, digital literacy also plays a key role in protecting the children from dangerous contents,” says Jasra quoted from RRI on Monday (2/23/2025).
In improving digital literacy for children, he believes that the educational world is important in educating children on internet safety to make them understand the dangers of social media.
He further explains that the study research involves the 2023 UNICEF survey and the new research from IDCOP regarding the children's internet usage patterns. In addition, he highlighted the role of parents who are still unfamiliar with the technology and do not understand parental control.
“The parents must learn and understand the parental control features that are available in the app,” explains Jasra. He adds that the lack of understanding on this matter allows children to access the negative contents.
Meanwhile, the government is still considering imposing sanctions on electronic system organizers. The relevant minister has stated that sanctions will be more focused on digital platforms than parents.
In his closing statement, he said that studies and surveys continue to be conducted to find the best formulation in age restrictions on the internet. Around 1,200 children have been surveyed in early 2024 to understand internet usage patterns and the effectiveness of this policy.
