inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) stated that 12 villages in Indonesia are recognized by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) as part of the world's community who are competent in dealing with tsunami disasters.

UNESCO's Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC) is scheduled to hand over Tsunami Ready Community certificates to the 12 villages during a special session of the Second Global Tsunami Symposium Forum in Banda Aceh City, Aceh Province on November 12th, 2024.

“This acknowledgement is an achievement as many villages in Indonesia are now part of Tsunami Ready Community UNESCO,” says the Head of the Tsunami Mitigation Working Group for the Indian and Pacific Ocean Regions of the BMKG, Suci Dewi Anugrah on Monday (11/11/2024).

Suci saw that Indonesians should be proud of this achievement as achieving this acknowledgement is not easy. Each village must meet 12 indicators in three components set by UNESCO, namely assessment, preparedness, and response.

Some important indicators include the village having a map of tsunami-prone zones, having an inventory of the number and distribution of residents in the danger zone, and having information facilities for evacuation complete with signs.

Intensive assistance provided by BMKG as the verifier, together with regional heads and various private institutions, contributed greatly in delivering the village to achieve this achievement.

With the addition of 12 new villages, there are 22 villages in Indonesia that have received recognition from UNESCO. Previously there were 10 Tsunami Ready Community villages such as Lamkruet Village and Gampong Mon Ikeun, on the west coast of Aceh.
