Inp.polri.go.id - Jakarta. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reports that 166 Indonesian citizens are currently facing the death penalty abroad.
The majority of these cases are in Malaysia, primarily linked to drug trafficking, while others are spread across different countries, particularly in the Middle East, concerning murder, said Judha Nugraha, the Director of Indonesian Citizens and Legal Entities Protection at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, on Tuesday (5/3/2024).
Among those facing the death penalty, 133 are men and 33 are women. Of these cases, 58 are related to murder and 108 to drug trafficking, antaranews.com reported.
Director Judha emphasized the need for the government's early involvement in these high-profile cases to ensure proper handling.
The government, through its representatives abroad, provides legal assistance, including lawyers and translators, to the Indonesian citizens. In addition to legal support, diplomatic initiatives are pursued, such as requesting clemency through letters from Indonesian ambassadors or the President for cases with final legal verdicts.
The ministry also make efforts to reunite families with detained citizens, aiming to provide emotional support and comfort.
Director Judha asserted that the government's role is not to provide immunity but to support due legal process without interfering with the jurisdiction of local laws.
