inp.polri.go.id - Palembang. The South Sumatra Regional Police, along with the Indonesian National Police (INP) Public Relations Division, are preparing the anticipation for the 2026 El Niño phenomenon through integrated mitigation measures on the threat of forest and land fires, food crises, and potential social disruption in South Sumatra.

This commitment was realized through a Public Dialogue entitled "Strategies for Preventing and Mitigating the Impact of the El Niño Disaster in South Sumatra to Achieve Environmental Resilience and Community Security," held in Palembang on Tuesday (5/19/2026).

This activity served as a strategic cross-sectoral forum involving the police, local government, academics, community organizations, and environmental and plantation sector stakeholders to develop joint steps to address the threat of an extreme dry season.

The forum discussed strengthening mitigation and early warning systems to reduce the risk of forest and land fires, maintain food security, and protect communities from the impacts of haze. Monitoring of peat areas and public education regarding the prohibition of land clearing by burning were also key priorities.

Brigadier General Trunoyudo Wisnu Andiko, Head of Public Information of INP Public Relations Division, emphasized that global climate change is a real threat that must be addressed together.

"We are committed to prioritizing transparent public communication and strengthening cross-sectoral cooperation. We cannot work alone; full support from the business community, community leaders, and the younger generation is essential to foster a culture of protecting the natural environment that is free from fire," Trunoyudo emphasized.

Meanwhile, the Head of Public Relations of the South Sumatra Regional Police, Senior Superintendent Nandang Mu'min Wijaya, emphasized their commitment to support integrated forest and land fire prevention policies.

"We are committed to fully supporting government programs for the welfare of the community. Through this dialogue, all elements will align their perceptions so that preventive measures and law enforcement related to forest and land fire prevention are aligned and have a real impact," Nandang said.

The activity concluded with the formulation of a collaborative roadmap that will serve as an operational reference for the integrated task force for handling El Niño and forest and land fires in South Sumatra.
