The  National Search and Rescue Agency (Basarnas) confirmed that at least 60 hikers trapped near Ranu Kumbolo on Mount Semeru were in safe condition following a sudden eruption that sent pyroclastic flows of hot gas and ash racing up to seven kilometers down the volcano’s slopes in East Java on Wednesday afternoon (19/11/2025).

“For those at Ranu Kumbolo the situation is safe, but we are advising them to descend,” said Edy Prakoso, the Deputy for Operations and Preparedness at Basarnas, as cited by antaranews.com

Authorities have begun mass evacuations in Lumajang, with at least 300 residents moved to temporary shelters as material from the eruption continues to threaten areas near river channels. 

Meanwhile, a married couple suffered burns of approximately 20 percent after slipping on ash-covered roads near the Gladak Perak Bridge, which had turned dangerously slick from hot volcanic deposits. They were rushed to Pasirian Hospital after receiving initial emergency care.

The Geological Agency maintained Semeru’s status at Level IV (Awas), warning of further activity.
