The Ministry of Education, Culture, Research and Technology (Kemendikbudristek) is studying the punishment for the 33 universities involved in human trafficking crimes by scamming their students for ferienjob in Germany. “Currently we are studying what would be the sanction. As of now, we are also in tight communication with the Police Criminal Investigation Unit, and also facilitated by the Presidential Staff Office,” says the Directorate General of High Education, Research, and Technology Abdul Haris in Jakarta on Wednesday (3/27/2024). Abdul stressed that the ferienjob program itself did not meet the requirement to be included in the Independent Learning Campus (MBKM) and was made clear on October 27th, 2023 by his party. The reason was because MBKM is part of the Ministry's effort in providing a space for students to learn comprehensively outside the class that could provide them with valuable skills and competency. The skill and competency are expected for them to be able to work in the future and help them in resolving issues in industries. “That’s the point of it, there must be a lesson and competency value,” said Abdul. On the other hand, the Germany ferienjob did not offer any lesson and competency value and the Ministry has clearly stated the job did not meet the MBKM criteria back in October 2023. However, the ministry still took this incident as a valuable lesson and pledged to improve their work in monitoring programs in the universities. “We took this as a lesson learned for us to continue our inspection and control tightly. I hope we could soon cover this loophole that is often taken advantage of by irresponsible individuals,” said Abdul. (ad/pt/pr/nm)
